Set up a KoboToolbox account

KoboToolbox is a popular product for data collection. If you have decided to use this product, the first step is to sign up for an account.
 
Visit the account sign up page and pick the account option that best meets your needs. At the time of writing, there are two options:

1. The Global KoboToolbox server
2. The European KoboToolbox server.

 
Why are there two options? Europe has robust data protection laws, so some organisations need or prefer to have their data stored within the EU. This makes it easier for them to comply with Europe's data protection regulations. Check with your organisation to see if you need to use the European server; if not, use the global server.
 
There is also an option to set up KoboToolbox on your own local server, but this is more complex and beyond the scope of this article.
 
Important: if you are collaborating with others, you must choose the same server. This will ensure you can share projects between accounts. If someone has asked you to set up a Kobo account but didn't tell you which server to use, check with them before proceeding.
 
Once you know the correct server to use, click "Sign Up" for the account option you want and follow the prompts. You will need to choose a unique username as usernames allow different users to collaborate on projects across accounts. Make sure the username is professional—consider using your formal name, job title, or organization name, rather than personal nicknames.
 
Another point to consider when signing up is how the account will be managed in future if you leave the organisation. If you have IT staff, talk with them about this. They may prefer to connect the account to a generic email address that the organisation controls, rather than your individual email address, in order to be able to transfer the account to someone else in future.  This issue is less of a consideration for someone using Kobo for a one-off purpose or who works independently, but if you are part of a team or organisation, account management needs to be considered.
